My name is Peter. I grew up and lived in a poor neighbourhood. The only life I knew was that of a farm labourer. However this is a life that has also produced many monks and priests of the Church. I have a cousin who is a member of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God. He spoke to me a lot about the Order, its spirit and its apostolate. I learned that the spirituality of the Order and its Founder is based on being called by God to help Jesus bring about the Kingdom of God in the lives of the poor and the sick. I had a natural empathy with people who were destitute and I felt their suffering very deeply. So the spirituality of the Order fascinated and attracted me. I felt a deep desire to give my life to helping people who were living unhappy miserable lives without hope of anything better in the future. In my turn, as I began to live the life of a Brother, I met difficult times that challenged me and almost succeeded in making me abandon my vocation. However, thanks to God's love and help, I overcame the difficulties and got through the turbulent times. Now, I wish for only one thing: that is to be always faithful to my Hospitaller Vocation and to devote myself to helping alleviate the pain and suffering of unfortunate people.
