365 TESTIMONIES OF HOSPITALITY

Brother

India

Paul Varghese

I come from Vazhoor in Kerala and a family in which I am the fourth child with two sisters and a brother. In 10th grade I decided to become a Religious in order to serve God. After I completed my education I read an article about Saint John of God and his Brothers. I was touched by the charism of St. John of God and how the Brothers put it into effect. So I applied to enter the Order and, in the initial stage of formation, grew spiritually, mentally and psychologically. A part of the formation that I liked was practicing by looking after the residents in the old age home attached to the Novitiate. In due course another novice and I made our first profession in 2008. As a newly professed Brother I was sent to college to study English literature. I found college life interesting and I also helped in the parish as a catechist. It was interesting that some of my companions and professors used to ask me “Why do you want to be a Brother? Wouldn’t it be better to become a priest”? I had no trouble in telling them that I wanted to be a Brother because of what I’d experienced of the Hospitality of my confreres and in their work.
