365 TESTIMONIES OF HOSPITALITY

While at school a Religious Sister greatly influenced me in her catechism class. As a result I decided that I would like to live a life of service for God and people.  After I left school I read a newspaper advertisement about the ‘Medical’ Brothers of Saint John of God. This prompted me to go and spend some time with the Brothers. In due course I joined the Order and made my first vows. After I made profession I was sent to study for the priesthood and, in due course, was ordained a Hospitaller priest. I then served as a chaplain in our hospital at Kattappana. That experience very much strengthened and confirmed my vocation to Hospitality. It was a great privilege to be hospitable to the human and sacramental needs of suffering people – our patients and their relatives. I had other experiences of serving people who suffer, including in our ministry to the aged and to children and adults who have a learning disability. When I reflect now about a vocation to Hospitality I think that it is a great mystery and we need a lifetime to understand it and experience it. It is a gradual process of unfolding the great benevolence and providence of a loving God. God calls people for his work of redemption his time, in his place and in his way. The path of Hospitality in the manner of Saint John of God was God’s way for me.
