Elena Echeverry De Uribe

I am Elena Echeverry de Uribe, and have worked as a volunteer for 40 years at Clínica San Juan de Dios. My experience of hospitality has essentially been to accompany the inpatients, offering disinterested assistance without looking for or accepting any form of material reward, but above all giving them love and understanding with total detachment with the sole interest of serving those less fortunate than ourselves, following the example of our elder Brother Jesus. But not only following Jesus’ example, but also mindful of the legacy left to me by my mother (with her evident vocation of service), who dedicated many years of her life to helping others, unknown to the family, so that it was only after her death that we discovered that she had provided financial assistance to many people. Not only have I the satisfaction of being able to help many sick people, but of being rewarded with a beautiful home and adorable children, as the sole rewards I have received. I thank the hospital for enabling me to develop as a person, to have been able to train for the activity I perform, to have come into contact with the ideological foundations and the mission of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God through the activities led by the In-House Committee of the Pastoral Care of the Sick and Humanisation.
