I am a nurse working in the Order’s ‘Granada’ unit for people with alcohol dependency problems. The Order has provided a systematic treatment program for alcoholics and their families at Gwangju since 1990. The objective is to help clients to live normal alcohol-free lives by admitting to their problem and coming to terms with it. The service is carried out in the hospitable manner of St. John of God. I would like to share the following expressions by the clients on the way to recovery that is offered the ‘Granada’ programs: “I really appreciate all of you who saved me from the mire of despair and helpless that I fell into and lived in for a long time. With your help I feel reborn.” “When all the people around me, and even my relatives, treated me as an unworthy drunkard, here in ‘Granada’ the Brothers and staff respected and treated me as a human being with rights”.  “My relatives worried about the open and homelike environment of ‘Granada’ when I decided to be admitted but I felt the atmosphere in Granada gave me self-respect and made me responsible for myself and my actions”.  “I could quit drinking and encountered the Lord with the commitment and help of the Brothers and staff through their specialized program based on A.A. and physical, psychological and spiritual recovery”.  Brother Hugh Gillan from Ireland introduced an A.A. group in Gwangju in 1983. Thanks are due to him for his commitment and enthusiasm as a Brother of St John of God working as a missionary in Korea. I am proud to be a member of the Family of St John of God.
