Everyone’s life is marked by milestone events. My meeting the Saint John of God was the spark that kindled a flame, which has continued burning ever since.

Saint John of God was the mirror of Jesus who has a preferential love for the poor and the humble.

With all the normal difficulties that everyone experiences I nevertheless felt welcomed, loved, appreciated and accepted by the Brothers of St John of God. The Order with its patients, Brothers and volunteers was like a nest for me, which I was able to develop, and my wings grew stronger until I was able to take to the air.

My vocation in the charism of St John of God has been constantly renewed, day after day, year after year. I was gradually fashioned by the sick, the elderly, my fellow travellers and the Brothers. Through them, the Gospel took flesh and was brought to life. Saint John of God pointed us to Christ, “the light, the truth and the life”. Anyone who follows Him will never walk in darkness.

I worked for a long time entertaining the elderly as a volunteer in the Saint John of God home. Faces with years and history behind them, still to be written. I began to feel and to love the icons of Christ: the sick and people stripped of their dignity.

We become merciful when we come down from our pedestal and approach life’s paths, and like children look at life and then see the rainbow emerge as if to signal where we should be, and nowhere else.
