I have worked at the St. John of God Special School as School Secretary since 2002. I feel that I was ‘called’ to my position because I was invited to apply for it. I did not know anything about Special Education at first so my first year was not easy. I found that working in a Special School requires a talent for showing extra love and patience for the special children. In harmony with the Order’s charism of Hospitality, our programs and services are open to everyone who might benefit from them regardless of their economic condition, religion or status in life. As Secretary I try to show an hospitable face to the children and their relatives. An example of that is that when some parents bring a doctor’s referral that they do not understand, I carefully explain it to them. As a school secretary I keep all the school documents but I try to respond to the particular needs and situations of the students and their families and not insist too much on organizational or bureaucratic requirements. We do not let financial problems hinder the children from availing of quality education. So, I monitor the attendance of the children. If they are not coming anymore without any notice, we call them to know what the reason is. I am able to respond to the concerns of parents and caregivers by listening to them and helping them face their difficulties. It gives me pleasure to be of help of Others.
