Meeting Saint John of God has been very important to my life. Traditionally, psychiatry has been the atheistic branch of medicine, and even therapeutic manuals urge us to protect our moral and ethical values in relations with patients. Becoming acquainted with Saint John of God has taught me to understand that before being a psychiatrist I have to be a good Christian and that remaining silent and not reporting wrong makes me an accomplice. In my professional role I have learnt to view my patients with affection which drives me to step up my efforts every day to understand and help them more.
By seeing Jesus in every patient I have to treat them better every day, to give the best of myself and see my patients as people, not illnesses. In my personal life I have become a better person, someone closer to God, a better father, capable of listening carefully my own son. The father who strives to be better every day. A more patient husband, more collaborative, more loving. A better son, living closer to my mother at all times. A more spiritual person who prays to grow in the path of faith. In short, a better person, who recognises his defects and limitations, and following the example of St John of God strives to improve his relationship with God and with everyone surrounding me. Being part of the Centre has transformed my life.
