I am the youngest in a family with eight children that lives in a small village of the diocese of Khandwa. Our parents are very religious and God fearing. My father was well known as a man of deep compassion. Being the youngest I grew up in the love of my family. When I was attending school I was attracted by the prayerful lifestyle of the clergy and religious whom I met. The parish priest, who was very spiritual and lived a deep prayer life, was very hospitable to the needs of others. In other words, while I was growing up I had a lot of good examples of hospitality. At first I thought about becoming a priest but when I was 18 I attended a vocations camp and there I heard about the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God at Deshgaon. I contacted the Brothers and they invited me ‘to come and see.’ I saw the great compassion that they showed to everyone in need. Their idea of hospitality was also to go out to people and not wait for them to come and ask for help. They told me that that was how Saint John of God had acted in Granada. When I spoke with my parents and brothers they all supported me in my idea of joining the Order. They were hospitable to the idea of the youngest member of our family carrying on the tradition of compassion for others that our parents had taught us.
