Europe Commission

Evaluation of the Schools of Hospitality

One of the agenda items at the Europe Commission’s meeting on 20-21 April, 2015 in Rome, was an evaluation of the Schools of Hospitality, based on the responses to a questionnaire distributed to the European Provinces. One thing that stood out clearly was the fact that in every Province, a sharp difference emerged between the formation modules on which they work. There is core module (often differentiated between the different groups of Co-workers), together with a number of more advanced qualities on specific topics. Usually, the core module provides two three-day formation blocks. In the Schools of Hospitality the topics dealt with cover 15 major thematic areas. Obviously not all the Provinces handle each of these areas. It is easier for a survey of the kind carried out by the Europe Commission to be imprecise. We know, for this reason, that all the Provinces (11) handle the theme “St John of God”, even though only 9 expressly reported it. For several topics are often treated jointly in one single area. It is inevitable that this kind of imprecision will arise if we try to draw a general picture of the situation. Otherwise we would have to draw up a list of more than 100 topics. Despite these imprecision is, however, we found that it the topics shown in the graph be low were mentioned quite commonly everywhere. There are three topic store themes that are handled everywhere: Saint John of God, the Order’s values and ethics. The European Provincial Curias will shortly be receiving more thorough analysis of the situation according to the results of the survey. The different approaches and the variety of the topics and subjects offered, can certainly provide one or other Province with ideas for reviewing and/or improving the approach adopted by their own School of Hospitality.
