Many of the Brothers have trained as Community Health Workers in order to be able to run health clinics in remote parts of our country. I am studying to gain CHW qualifications. I am studying on an island called Karkar which is located in the Bismarck Sea about 30 kilometres out from Madang. The people on this island, and my fellow students, do not know anything about the Order so I often have to explain to them what our Order is like and how it came to begin and what its spirit is like. Because my companions are interested in health care they are very open to hearing about an Order in the Church that attends to the sick and poor and needy. I often explain to them that both Brothers and Co-workers of the Order are members of the Family of Saint John of God. When I tell them that our values – Quality, Respect, Responsibility and Spirituality – all come under the general heading of Hospitality they can understand that that is a great charism that God has bestowed on His people through us. They know what hospitality means because that is a strong part of our Melanesian culture which influences us to share everything that we have with our family and clan. I tell them that John of God Hospitality sees everyone as part of the big clan of God’s children. At least, that is what I learned when I became a Brother of Saint John of God.
