At high school I was taught by Brothers of the Marist congregation (founded by the French Saint Marcellin Champagnat). So, when I left school and took a position in the retail trade I had a good understanding and appreciation of the vocation of the religious Brother. I lived fairly close to the Order’s “Kendall Grange” Special School for intellectually handicapped boys. As I came to know more about the life and work of the Brothers of Saint John of God I became more and more convinced that I should apply to join the Order. Eventually, I joined the Order in 1964. As a Scholastic Brother I trained in psychiatric nursing and my life was cast, more or less, into the health care side of our Province’s ministry. In 1994 this resulted in me being appointed as the first chairperson of the newly founded Catholic Health Care organisation of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. This was the beginning of twenty years of intense involvement in the organisation of Catholic Health Care at both regional and national levels. On 8 August 2014 that 20 years was recognised when the Diocese of Parramatta presented me with a Medal of Honour. I only mention that award because I think that it sheds light on the significant contribution that many Brothers , like me, have made to the health care ministry of the wider Church throughout the world. This service of the Church has been an integral part of my Hospitaller Vocation.
