In July 2011 I found a position as a physical therapist at the St. John of God Polyclinic in Manila. I sometimes wonder if it was a coincidence or destiny that I encountered the Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God. Whatever it was, I am grateful that I have had the chance to work with them in their mission of Hospitality towards the poor, sick and handicapped. Although I expected my work to be demanding, I soon entered into the spirit of service and hospitality that prevails at the clinic. Each day feels like my first day except that I learn more every day. As a physical therapist I carry out many different tasks but one of the most important is to develop the ability to be hospitable to others and their needs. I may not come from a wealthy family but I can tell the whole world, I am WEALTHY. While travelling in this God-given life, I know I have already accomplished something worthwhile. I realise this after just a few years of my experience in this community. My encounters with less fortunate people who come to the Order for help make me realise that I have been very blessed. I have learned to value life. I am confident that my life’s journey will lead to a happy ending if I live it in the service of others. This is how I personally encounter hospitality and have shared it concretely through my profession.
