The 400th anniversary of the Brothers of St John of God in Bavaria
Meeting of the Central European Provinces on 29 June in Neuburg
Il 29 June 1622, Brother Gabriele Conte di Ferrara sent an Italian and a
Spanish Brother to Neuburg, on the Danube, to visit Duke Wolfgang Wilhelm.
Exactly 400 years later, on 29 June 2022, 60 guests - Brothers and affiliated
lay people - took up the invitation of the Bavarian Province to celebrate this
important historic milestone together in Neuburg. A total of 30 Brothers
gathered from the Austrian Province (with Provincial Delegations in the Czech
Republic, Slovakia and Hungary), the Polish Province and naturally from
Bavaria. The Religious Houses in these countries originally belonged to the
Vienna-based Province of St Michael the Archangel, including the Hospital of St
Wolfgang in Neuburg until 1781.
From Vienna, Brother Gabriel Conte di Ferrara tried to spread the Order
north of the Alps. With this aim, an Italian Brother, Bartolomeo Bonicontro,
and his Spanish Brother Maximilian Veiga left for Neuburg. "They left with
many uncertainties in their baggage," remarked the Bavarian Provincial,
Brother Rudolf Knopp, in his welcome at the beginning of the Eucharist in the
chapel of St Augustine's House. They wondered: would the Duke grant their
request to found a hospital? - Duke Wolfgang Wilhelm proved to be entirely in
favour of the Order and signed the Founding Charter on 11 November of the same
year.
"Hospitality burned in their hearts," said the Provincial
again, speaking of the two Brothers who arrived in Neuburg in the summer of
1622, "they did not fear hardships and deprivation so that the charism of
John of God would also be implanted in Germany". The founder of the Order,
John of God, was also remembered by Bishop Bertram Meier in his homily. The
Bishop thanked the Brothers "for their faithful and generous service at St
Augustine's in Neuburg".
At the end of the Mass, Brother Rudolf Knopp conferred the parchment of
affiliation to the Order on three important personalities for the Order in
Bavaria.
