Floods in Piura (Peru)

The Coastal el Niño phenomenon

The Superior General, Brother Jesús Etayo, has visited the St John of God Centres in Peru.

Brother Jesús Etayo O.H., the Superior General of the Hospitaller Order of the Brothers of St John of God, accompanied by Brother William Pintado, the Provincial Superior, and Brother Moisés Martín Boscá, Director of the Order’s Missions and International Cooperation Office in Rome, went to visit the Saint John of God Retirement Home and the Saint John of God Hospital at Piura on 4 April to see for themselves the devastation in Northern Peru caused by the  Coastal El Niño phenomenon.

This visit was intended to demonstrate to the patients in both Centres and their loved ones and the Brothers, the Mercedarian Sisters and Co-workers the close support of the whole Order in these dramatic circumstances. Facilities in both Centres have been damaged, but with no victims, thank God, but some of our Co-workers and so many people living in the zone have suffered great loss and damage to their homes and property.

They were able to see the solidarity which this tragedy has attracted, with the Religious Communities in the Centre and its Co-workers and Volunteers working all-out to support and bring hope to the people in the affected zones, redistributing the donations arriving in response to emergency appeals made within and outside the Order.
