As per tradition, the newly elected Superior General
has adopted a coat of arms and a motto, which we present below.
The pomegranate surmounted by the cross is the
symbol of the Hospitaller Order and its Founder, Saint John of God. It recalls
Granada, the Spanish city where the Saint began his work of mercy, and whose
name in Spanish means precisely "pomegranate."
Inside the pomegranate, on the left half, is depicted
the Black Madonna of Częstochowa, one of the most venerated Marian icons
in the world. Chosen as the symbol of the 70th General Chapter, held in
Częstochowa (Poland) from October 15 to November 7, 2024, it represents the
protection and guidance of the Virgin Mary over the new government and the
entire Family of the Order.
On the right half, the sword and heart,
inspired by the coat of arms that still appears today on the façade of the
Venegas family house in Granada, recall the motto of Saint John of God: El
corazón mande ("Let the heart command"). This principle guided
the Saint from the very beginning of his mission when, precisely in the atrium
of the Venegas House, he began to offer shelter and hospitality to the poor of
the city. Rays of light radiate from the heart, symbolizing the presence
of the Order in 54 countries worldwide.
The figures surrounding the pomegranate represent the Family of Saint John of God in its
diversity and universality, evoking the value of synodality, which is
fundamental in today's Church.
Finally, the motto "GENEROUS IN CHARITY"
expresses the Order's commitment to living charity with love, compassion, and
humanity, responding concretely to the needs of the world.
The election of Fra Pascal Ahodegnon as Superior
General under the auspices of the Virgin of Częstochowa highlights a special
connection with the tradition and mission of the Order, which is dedicated to
serving the sick and those in need. The presence of this Marian icon
underscores the spiritual dimension and trust in the maternal guidance of the
Virgin, accompanying the Order on its future path.
