Today we are commemorating the conversion of St John
of God. For it was on this day, 20 January 1538 in Granada, on the Feast of
Saint Sebastian the Martyr, that after listening to the sermon by Saint John
Avila on St Sebastian that St John of God completely changed the direction of
his life: it was a radical conversion. He humbled himself, exposing himself to
the mockery of the crowd that had gathered to hear the sermon. Believed to have
lost his mind, he was confined in the Royal Hospital in Granada, where he
concentrated on the idea of his future mission: "May Jesus Christ
eventually give me the grace to run a hospice where the abandoned poor and
those suffering from mental disorders might have refuge and that I may be able
to serve them as I wish."(Castro, Chapter IX, Translation by Brother Benedict
O’Grady, O.H.). And on this day of celebration for the whole Order, the General
Curia is welcoming Brother Manuel Armenteros as the new Superior of the La
Nocetta Community. Let us pray that Our Lord will accompany him and assist him
in the new task entrusted to him. From Malaga to Rome: welcome Brother Manuel!
