Sunday 18 December 2022,
the Fourth Sunday of Advent, is a day that will go down in history. In the chapel of the St John of God Hospital
in Cordova, the Cause for the beatification and canonisation of our confrčre
Brother Boniface Bonillo was opened. The Bishop of Cordova, Mgr Demetrio
Fernández Gonzales, installed the members of the Tribunal who will have the
task of questioning the witnesses on the life, virtues, fame of holiness and
signs of the Servant of God Brother Boniface. At the end of the prayer of 2nd
Vespers, the first session of the Cause was opened with the official opening of
the diocesan Process, the Postulator General Brother Dario Vermi presented the Bishop with his
credentials, the Supplex Libellus and the list of witnesses. The Bishop, after
verifying the authenticity of the documents for the validity of the opening of
the Cause, invited all the members of the Tribunal: Fr Carlos Morale Fernández,
Episcopal Delegate; Fr Juan Laguna Navarro, Promoter of Justice; Fr Varona
Villar, Notary Public; the Postulator-General and the Vice Postulator, Brother
José Ramón Pérez Acosta, to take the oath and to perform the office entrusted
to them with uprightness and fidelity.
During the ceremony, the Bishop recalled the person of the Servant of
God, who was known by all in Cordova not only for his goodness and love for the
poor, sick and most needy, but because he was able to generate a movement of
charity that still lives on today in the city. He recalled that, with this
first legal step, Brother Boniface has been "expropriated" from the
Hospitaller Order to be handed over to the whole Church. Present at the event
were the Provincial Superior of Spain, Brother Amador Fernández Fernández, some
members of the Provincial Council, Brothers from neighbouring communities and a
large group representing the people of Cordova. The beginning of this Cause is
an important first step which sets out on a demanding path of study and
research, so that the Church may recognise the heroic virtues of Brother
Boniface and one day present him as a model of Christian life and consecrated
life for the whole Church and for our Hospitaller Family.
