Today,
the hospitaller charism seed has grown and produced enormously fulfilling the
legacy our Lord Jesus Christ left with the Holy Catholic Church over 2000 years
ago and through our Holy Founder St. John of God, over 450 years ago and
through our founding Brothers. We are grateful to each one of you for your
selfless dedication to the mission of Sierra
Leone 56 years today.
The Hospitaller mission of the Hospitaller Order in Sierra Leone has
celebrated her 50th anniversary in 2017 and it was our dream to
establish a more closer relationship with the government of Sierra Leone. This
was the aspiration of our Provincial Superior, Br. Bartholomew Kamara and our
Prior General Br. Jesus Etayo whose wisdoms thought fit to encourage us to
continue with our hospitality practice in order to serve mankind.
The Brothers of St. John of God have remained in Sierra Leone throughout
specific crisis that have seriously affected this country. The hospitaller
Order has always remained to serve the needy people during these hard times. In
these difficult moments where health systems are weak and fragile, our country
is not an exemption. The Hospitaller Order has done her utmost best to ensure
the health system of the services remain resilient. The hospitaller Order runs
a general hospital providing internal medicine,
general surgery, pediatrics and maternity, with the expansion of primary health
care in the villages in Lungi and Lunsar, and Education
through the St. John of God Campus, University of Makeni.
We remain very much grateful and appreciative of the contributions of the
organizations of the Order and other NGOs that
have made it possible, despite the difficulties, to maintain the activities of
the Hospital during all these years and that were aggravated by the war
(1991-2002), the pandemic of the Ebola (2014-2015) and the Covid pandemic
(2020-2022).
It was on the 9th April, 2022, at the Awards night as the
climax of a 3-day National Health Summit organised by the Ministry of Health
and Sanitation of Sierra Leone, when the Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr.
Austin Demby, announced publicly a deserving recognition award amongst all
other Christian Hospitals providing health services in this country St. John of
God Catholic Hospital as the “Best Faith Based Hospital”.
We must say thanks to God and our Major Superiors for their guarantee in ensuring we find the resources to share with the Poor and needy of Sierra Leone.
