A new eye-surgery technique has been used for the first time anywhere in the world by Professor Dr Michael Amon in the Ophthalmology Department at our Vienna hospital to implant an extra trifocal lens in a patient in addition to an existing artificial lens. Until now, the trifocal lens has been incorporated into the artificial lens. “Previously, in the case of any adverse collateral effects, the artificial lens had to be replaced by the trifocal component,” explained Prof. Amon. “Now, in the event of any collateral effect following an operation, or if the patient develops an eye infection, the trifocal lens can be removed without any problem and the patient will continue to see using the monofocal lens with the help of glasses, if necessary”. The trifocal lens can be used today in cataract patients provided that they have no other eye pathologies and can therefore continue to live without needing glasses using the trifocal lens.” We send our very best wishes to the St John of God Hospital in Vienna.
